Temple prostitution in Hindu temples has created a religious gateway into child sex trafficking in India and Southeast Asia.

Hundreds of years ago, Devadasis, the female slaves of Hindu god’s, were esteemed and honored as beautiful women who performed sex acts and erotic dances for these Hindu gods. Over the centuries, however, this practice has evolved into the exploitation of young girls in lower castes to be used as sex slaves.

Around the age of 13, girls are ceremoniously handed over to priests in Hindu temples to spend the rest of their youth serving the Hindu gods through sex acts. The money generated from this exploitation goes into the hands of priests and back into the temple. In 1988, the Indian government made the practice of temple prostitution illegal, yet India accounts for over 8 million slaves in the world today according to the Global Slavery Index.

These girls (and boys) deserve better.
