Girl Set Free’s Approach To Online Trafficking
By Josie Bixler
Did you know that 30% of all federal sex trafficking victims in the United States were recruited online?
In fact the 2020 Federal Human Trafficking Report states that “online solicitation has dwarfed other tactics used by traffickers to solicit buyers of commercial sex for over a decade, appearing as the primary form of solicitation in over twice as many criminal cases as any other method each year since 2008.”
The New York Times reported that because of the pandemic shutdown people were spending more and more time online, including an increasing number of children who were without supervision. They found that in the United States alone there was a “99% increase in children being enticed by online predators between January and September of 2020.”
As traffickers and predators adapt and shift to prey on the most vulnerable, we must also stay proactive in preventing exploitation and intercepting victims before they are taken advantage of.
We do that by:
• Prioritizing awareness and education so that communities around the world are prepared to handle trafficking situations and do not fall prey to trafficking schemes.
• Funding interception, rescue and restoration for a wholistic approach to take on human trafficking.
• Providing job skills training and job opportunities so that women can sustain themselves and their family without putting themselves at risk.
Our proactive and wholistic approach is only effective because of our community of Freedom Fighters that have come alongside the mission of Girl Set Free to send rescue and set people free.
