Child Slave Rescued; Suspects Arrested
Acting on a tip-off, our partners in Malawi launched an investigation and rescued a minor labor trafficking victim!
Recently, our partner’s investigations team managed to rescue a 14-year-old boy named Zefeniya* who had been trafficked to a rural part of Lilongwe, where he was forced to herd cattle for four different farmers. The victim had been in this situation for almost a year and a half.
Our partners received a tip-off from an informant in the same area and began conducting an investigation in Lilongwe. After gathering information, the matter was reported to the Malawi Police who were satisfied with the findings, and on May 19, 2021, the Interpol department of the police station sent two officers and one investigator to accompany them on an operation to rescue Zefeniya.
After searching for many hours, they finally found and extracted him. He is now being sheltered at the Salvation Army’s safe home in Mchinji. The police are currently working on arresting the farmers involved and have already summoned some of them to the station.
